Gumroad costs nothing a month. Shopify charges a plan before you have sold a thing. That single difference is why most creators selling a digital file never seriously price Shopify, and it is the wrong place to stop.
Gumroad's 10% plus 50 cents comes on top of card processing, which its own fee article lists separately at 2.9% plus 30 cents.
Shopify Basic through Shopify Payments charges no transaction fee at all; you pay the plan and the card rate, from 2.9% plus 30 cents for US cards.
On a $25 template pack, that makes every Gumroad sale $3.00 more expensive than the same sale on Shopify. Shopify Basic costs $29 a month billed yearly, so it pays for itself at about ten sales a month.
At $2,000 a month in sales, Gumroad costs $3,864 a year and Shopify Basic $1,332.
The fee is not the whole comparison. Gumroad is a merchant of record that files your sales tax and VAT worldwide; Shopify calculates tax but leaves registering, filing and paying it to you.
Gumroad needs no website and delivers files natively; Shopify is a full store that sells downloads through a free app. And Shopify sells anything that goes in a box, which Gumroad does not.
We re-verified every Gumroad figure on this page against Gumroad's own help articles on 12 October 2026, and every Shopify figure against Shopify's pricing page and help centre the same week.
Shopify's pricing page served us euro prices on a direct read, so the dollar plan prices below are from the US version of the same page, and the euro figures appear alongside for European readers.
An ecommerce platform is software that hosts your products, takes the payment and delivers the goods, and Shopify and Gumroad sit at opposite ends of it: Shopify is store software with a monthly plan and no platform cut, and Gumroad is a hosted checkout and marketplace with no plan and a percentage of every sale.
Shopify Basic is cheaper than Gumroad once you sell more than about ten $25 digital products a month, because Shopify Payments charges only card processing on top of a $29 monthly plan billed yearly ($39 monthly), while Gumroad charges 10% plus 50 cents plus processing: $1,332 a year against $3,864 at $2,000 a month in sales.
Gumroad still wins for a first product, for sellers with no website, for anyone who wants worldwide tax handled by a merchant of record, and for buyers found through its Discover marketplace.
Shopify is the only one of the two that also sells physical goods. Framekit is a separate third option for digital files sold from a portfolio site.
Full disclosure: Framekit is our product and appears below as a clearly labelled third option for one kind of seller; it does not claim the Shopify vs Gumroad win, and it sells digital downloads only. No purchases were made on either platform for this page; every figure comes from Shopify's and Gumroad's own pricing pages and help centres, linked where it carries weight.
How We Compared Shopify and Gumroad
This comparison prices Shopify and Gumroad from the plans, card rates and fees each one publishes, applies them to one carried digital product at three monthly volumes, and separates what was read at the source from what was calculated, because nothing was test-purchased.
Read at the source in October 2026. Shopify's pricing page, which served euros on our direct read and US dollars in its US version, and Shopify's help centre articles on the free Digital Products app, US payouts, refunds, chargebacks and third-party transaction fees.
Gumroad's fees article, its getting-paid article and its help on chargebacks and file limits, read on 12 October 2026.
Calculated. A $25 template pack bought by US card buyers, sold at $500, $2,000 and $5,000 a month, which is 20, 80 and 200 sales a month.
Card processing is 2.9% plus 30 cents on both: Gumroad's fee article names it, and it is Shopify Payments' published online rate for standard US cards on Basic.
Shopify's introductory offer is left out, because it is not what you pay for most of the time you run a store.
Not tested, and corrected. The August version priced Shopify in euros and Gumroad in dollars without converting, and labelled some flows as "measured"; this version prices both in dollars, keeps the euro figures in a separate table, and drops the labels for tests we did not run.
Shopify vs Gumroad at a Glance
This table sets Shopify and Gumroad side by side on the sixteen points creators selling templates, presets, LUTs, prints or merch ask about most, using each platform's October 2026 terms.

| Card rate, US online | From 2.9% + 30c on Basic, 2.7% on Grow, 2.5% on Advanced | 2.9% + 30c on top of the fee |
| Third-party gateway fee | 2% Basic, 1% Grow, 0.6% Advanced, 0.2% Plus | Not applicable |

| Marketplace | No equivalent of Discover | Discover |
In one lineShopify is the cheaper engine once you sell regularly and the only one of the two that ships boxes, while Gumroad is the faster start, the tax department and the marketplace, priced sale by sale.
Two Opposite Price Structures
Shopify charges a flat monthly plan and no platform cut when you use Shopify Payments, and Gumroad charges no plan and 10% plus 50 cents of every sale, so Shopify gets cheaper per sale the more you sell and Gumroad stays the same percentage until you pass $20,000 in a month.
Here is what the seller keeps from one sale to a US card buyer, before Shopify's monthly plan is counted.
| Price | Gumroad direct keeps | Shopify Basic keeps, before the plan | Gap per sale | Sales a month for Basic (yearly billing) to pay off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $9 | $7.04 | $8.44 | $1.40 | About 21 |
| $19 | $15.75 | $18.15 | $2.40 | About 12 |
| $25 | $20.97 | $23.97 | $3.00 | About 10 |
| $49 | $41.88 | $47.28 | $5.40 | About 6 |
| $99 | $85.43 | $95.83 | $10.40 | About 3 |
The gap per sale is exactly Gumroad's platform fee, because card processing is the same 2.9% plus 30 cents on both. On monthly billing, at $39, Basic needs about a third more sales to break even: about 13 a month on a $25 product.
Shopify's plans in dollars and euros
| Plan | US monthly billing | US yearly billing | Euro monthly | Euro yearly | Online card rate, standard cards | Third-party gateway fee | Extra staff accounts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 | $29 a month | €29 | €22 a month | 2.9% + 30c (US); 1.9% + €0.25 (Europe) | 2% | None |
| Grow | $105 | $79 a month | €82 | €62 a month | 2.7% + 30c (US); 1.8% + €0.25 (Europe) | 1% | 5 |
| Advanced | $399 | $299 a month | €384 | €289 a month | 2.5% + 30c (US); 1.7% + €0.25 (Europe) | 0.6% | 15 |
European sellers should note the lower card rates on standard European cards; Shopify's euro page lists higher rates for Amex and international cards (2.9% plus €0.25 on Basic).
In the US, Shopify's help centre separates standard domestic consumer cards from premium cards, a group that covers business cards and all domestic American Express cards and carries a higher rate.

What Shopify and Gumroad Cost Over a Year
At $2,000 a month in sales of a $25 product, Gumroad costs $3,864 a year including card processing and Shopify Basic costs $1,332 billed yearly or $1,452 billed monthly, so Shopify keeps about $2,500 more with the seller before any paid apps or themes.
Every figure is the seller's full annual cost: plan, platform fee and card processing at 2.9% plus 30 cents. Framekit is included for orientation; its paid plans are shown at yearly billing.
| Monthly sales (sales a month) | Gumroad direct | Gumroad via Discover | Shopify Basic, yearly | Shopify Basic, monthly | Shopify Grow, yearly | Framekit Free | Framekit Business, yearly |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $500 (20) | $966 | $1,800 | $594 | $714 | $1,182 | $546 | $618 |
| $2,000 (80) | $3,864 | $7,200 | $1,332 | $1,452 | $1,884 | $2,184 | $1,356 |
| $5,000 (200) | $9,660 | $18,000 | $2,808 | $2,928 | $3,288 | $5,460 | $2,832 |
Shopify Basic beats Gumroad at every volume a regular seller reaches. The gap on yearly billing is $372 a year at $500 a month, $2,532 at $2,000 and $6,852 at $5,000.
Grow only makes sense for the staff accounts. Its lower card rate, 2.7%, saves $120 a year at $5,000 a month, far less than the $600 extra the plan costs over Basic on yearly billing. Pay for Grow when a second person needs a login, not to save on fees.
The Discover column is the ceiling. It assumes every Gumroad sale came through the marketplace. Most sellers see far fewer, but each one costs 30%.
The gateway trap
The table assumes Shopify Payments. If you use another payment provider as your main gateway, Shopify adds a third-party transaction fee of 2% on Basic on top of that provider's own rate.
On the carried example that turns Shopify Basic's $1,332 into $1,812 at $2,000 a month, and $2,808 into $4,008 at $5,000.
Shopify's help centre says Shopify Payments, Shop Pay and manual methods carry no third-party fee, and PayPal is exempt when Shopify Payments is your primary provider.
If Shopify Payments is not available in your country, rebuild this table before choosing Shopify.
Run it yourselfmultiply your product price by 10% and add 50 cents; that is what each Gumroad sale costs you on top of processing. Divide $29 (Shopify Basic billed yearly) or $39 (monthly) by that number.
If you sell more items than the result every month, Shopify Basic costs less, before the time it takes to build and run a store.
What Shopify Costs Beyond the Plan
Shopify's plan price is not the whole Shopify bill, because a working store also needs a theme you are happy with, any apps you add, the right payment setup and, above all, the time to build and maintain a store, none of which Gumroad asks of you.
Digital delivery is an app, but a free one. Shopify sells downloads through its free Digital Products app rather than natively. It is a small setup step, and it is the step most creators trip over in the first hour.
Our roundup of Shopify apps for digital downloads covers the paid alternatives for license keys or stricter download controls.
Themes. Free themes are usable; many stores end up buying a paid theme as a one-time cost. Budget for it rather than discovering it.
Staff. Basic includes no additional staff accounts. A studio where two people manage the store is on Grow, at $79 a month billed yearly, which more than doubles the plan cost.
The introductory offer. Shopify's pricing page offers a three-day free trial and then a reduced price for the first three months, €1 a month on the euro page we read. It is a good way to build the store, and it is not the price to plan a year around.
Time. A Gumroad product is a file, a price and a link. A Shopify store is a theme, a navigation, legal pages, payment settings, tax settings and an app, which is a day of work rather than ten minutes.
If the product is still an experiment, that day is not obviously worth $3 a sale.

Tax, Payouts, Refunds and Chargebacks: The Mechanics
Gumroad acts as the legal seller, so it files tax worldwide and fights chargebacks, but it holds your money for at least a week behind a $100 minimum, while Shopify pays out in three to five business days with no minimum and leaves tax filing and dispute evidence with you.
| What happens | Shopify (Shopify Payments, US) | Gumroad |
|---|---|---|
| Merchant of record | You | Gumroad |
| Sales tax and VAT | Shopify calculates tax at checkout on every plan; its help centre says you must file and remit | Gumroad collects and remits worldwide |
| When the money arrives | Within 3 to 5 business days after a payment is captured; longer while an account is new | After a minimum 7-day hold, on a weekly payout covering sales to the previous Friday |
| Payout minimum | None in the US | $100 on weekly, monthly and quarterly payouts |
| Payout day | Rolling | Thursday for US bank accounts |
| You refund a $25 sale | The original card fee of about $1.03 is not returned | Gumroad returns its $3.00 fee; you lose the $1.03 of processing |
| A chargeback | Amount deducted from your next payout, plus a $15 fee in the US, which Shopify may refund if you win | Treated as a full refund; Gumroad returns its fee and contests it |
| Who writes the evidence | You, in the Shopify admin | You add evidence within 72 hours; Gumroad argues |
| Currency conversion | 1.5% in the US when capturing in a non-domestic currency | Not compared |
| PayPal | Can run beside Shopify Payments without a third-party fee | PayPal payouts cost 2% |
The tax row is the strongest argument for Gumroad. A US seller selling downloads mostly at home may owe little, because most states only require registration once sales into the state pass an economic nexus threshold, commonly $100,000 a year, and some do not tax downloads at all.
A seller outside the EU selling to EU consumers owes VAT from the first sale, and a non-UK seller owes UK VAT from the first sale; on Shopify that is your registration and your quarterly return, on Gumroad it is Gumroad's.
Our VAT on digital products guide and do you need a merchant of record work through where the line falls.
The payout row is the strongest argument for Shopify. Three $25 sales in a quiet month pay nothing on Gumroad until the balance clears $100. On Shopify they arrive within a week.
Our guide to refunds and chargebacks on digital products covers how to answer a dispute where the evidence is a download log.
Digital Delivery: Built In vs an App
Gumroad was built to deliver files and does it natively with a buyer library, while Shopify delivers files through its free Digital Products app, which is capable but asks you to set limits, choose where links appear and decide how updates reach past buyers.
| Detail | Shopify Digital Products app | Gumroad |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Included |
| Files | Up to 50 files per variant, 5GB combined; files added from the product page can be up to 500 MB each | 20 GB per file on paid products; 250 MB in total on free products |
| How buyers get files | Email after purchase, plus the Thank you and Order status pages if enabled | Receipt email with a View content button, and the Library |
| Download limits | Unlimited by default, settable per variant | No per-file cap documented in what we read |
| Link expiry | Links do not expire | Receipt links keep working |
| Bandwidth | No bandwidth limit | Not published |
| Updated files | Choose Send update to email past buyers new links; replacing a file with the same name updates existing links | Resend receipts or post to past buyers |
| External links | Accepted from Notion, Google Drive, Dropbox, YouTube, Vimeo and similar | Not applicable |
Two Shopify rows are better than most creators expect. Links that never expire and an optional emailed update mean a LUT pack you revise reaches every past buyer with one click.
Gumroad's Library is still the more familiar experience for buyers, and its 20 GB per-file limit suits very large sample libraries better than 5GB per variant.
Where Gumroad Wins
Gumroad is the better choice for a first product, for creators without a website, for sellers who want a merchant of record to handle tax and disputes worldwide, and for anyone whose buyers come through its Discover marketplace, and none of that shows up in a per-sale fee table.
Free until you sell. Testing a product on Gumroad costs nothing if nobody buys. On Shopify, even the introductory offer becomes $29 to $39 a month.
Ten minutes instead of a day. A file, a price and a link. No theme, no app, no store settings.
Tax handled everywhere. As merchant of record since 1 January 2025, Gumroad collects and remits sales tax and VAT worldwide, the one job Shopify's standard plans leave entirely to you.
Discover. A sale credited to Gumroad's marketplace costs a flat 30%, $7.50 on a $25 pack. It is the only mechanism on this page that produces a buyer you did not already have.
Attribution follows how the buyer arrived, so export your sales CSV, as Gumroad's fee article suggests, and check how many orders were charged at 30%.
Kinder refunds and a dispute desk. Gumroad returns its own fee on a refund and contests chargebacks for you; Shopify keeps the card fee and leaves the evidence to you.
Verdict: start on Gumroad when you are proving that a product sells, have no site, or want tax off your desk. When the percentage starts to bite, Gumroad's fees explained shows the per-order maths and the best Gumroad alternatives ranks where sellers move.
Where Shopify Wins
Shopify is the better choice for anyone selling regularly, anyone selling physical products or merch beside downloads, and anyone who wants a real store with a real customer database on their own domain, because past about ten sales a month it costs far less than Gumroad and it scales to things Gumroad cannot sell.
Far cheaper at volume. $594 against $966 a year at $500 a month, $1,332 against $3,864 at $2,000 and $2,808 against $9,660 at $5,000, on Basic billed yearly.
It ships boxes. Prints, books, apparel and anything else that needs shipping, inventory and variants, alongside the digital files.
Faster money. Payouts within three to five business days with no minimum, against Gumroad's weekly cycle behind a seven-day hold.
A store you own. Your domain, your theme, your customer list and order history, and an app ecosystem that covers upsells, reviews, subscriptions and more when you need them.
Better update delivery than most expect. The Digital Products app's Send update and non-expiring links handle revised files cleanly.
The honest limits. You are the merchant, so tax filing and dispute evidence are yours; the card fee is not returned on refunds; the store takes real time to build; and Basic has no extra staff accounts.

Verdict: move to Shopify once a product sells every week, or start there if you sell anything physical. The wider field of downloads-first options is in the best Shopify alternatives for digital products, and Squarespace vs Shopify covers the design-led alternative.
Framekit: A Third Option for Digital Files on a Portfolio Site
Framekit does not decide Shopify vs Gumroad, and it cannot sell anything physical, but it fits one seller both of them serve awkwardly: a photographer, filmmaker or designer who sells digital files beside commissioned work and wants the store inside the portfolio site rather than as a separate Shopify build or a Gumroad page.
Framekit is an AI website builder whose store, client galleries, Frame.io-style video review and Slides decks share one account, so the site that wins a commission, the gallery that delivers it and the preset store that sells to fans run from the same place.

What it does that neither does. Shopify can run a whole site, but it is built around a product catalogue, so a portfolio is something you shape a store theme into. Gumroad has product pages and a profile.
Framekit starts from the portfolio: AI-built pages for your work, with a store section you can place under any case study and a direct framekit.ai/buy link per product that also sells without a site.
The money, honestly. Framekit charges 5% on Free and Starter, 3% on Pro and 0% on Business at $39 a month ($31 billed yearly), with Stripe's processing on top and the fee taken after any discount code.
On a digital product with the same card rate, Framekit Business and Shopify Basic are almost level: $1,356 against $1,332 a year at $2,000 a month on yearly billing, a $24 difference in Shopify's favour, and identical on monthly billing.
Below about $580 a month, Framekit's free plan costs less than Shopify Basic billed yearly. Both are far below Gumroad at every volume we priced.
Within Framekit, Business beats Free at $780 a month and Pro at about $667 ($533 on yearly billing).
What you give up. Framekit sells digital downloads only: no physical goods, shipping, inventory, subscriptions, courses, affiliates, license keys, pay what you want, upsells or abandoned-cart emails, and no app store.
Like Shopify, it leaves you as the merchant, and it goes further: Framekit does not calculate or add tax at checkout at all, so any VAT or sales tax you owe sits inside your price. It keeps its fee on a refund.
Checkout always opens at framekit.ai/buy with your name, logo and a "Powered by Framekit" line, even when the site uses your own domain.
Download links in order emails last 7 days and can be resent; updated files are not pushed to past buyers.

Skip it ifyou sell prints, merch or anything else that ships, need automatic tax calculation, or want Shopify's app ecosystem.

Verdict: for a working creative whose products are files and whose buyers arrive at a portfolio, Framekit costs about what Shopify Basic does and also runs the site, the client galleries and the review links. For anyone shipping physical goods, Shopify is the answer and Framekit is not in the running. The Gumroad side of that choice is priced in Gumroad vs Framekit.
Moving From Gumroad to Shopify: A Checklist
Moving from Gumroad to Shopify is a store build rather than a re-upload, and the decision to settle first is tax, because the day your first Shopify sale goes through, every sales tax and VAT obligation Gumroad used to carry becomes yours.
| Step | What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Export Gumroad customers and sales as CSV | Your buyer list is the asset that does not rebuild itself |
| 2 | Download every file, cover and description | You will re-upload each file to the Digital Products app |
| 3 | Decide your tax setup: US states where you have nexus, EU OSS and UK VAT if you sell there | Shopify calculates tax; you register, file and remit |
| 4 | Confirm Shopify Payments is available in your country | Without it, Basic adds a 2% third-party fee |
| 5 | Choose Basic unless a second person needs a login | Extra staff accounts start on Grow |
| 6 | Install the free Digital Products app and attach files to each variant | 50 files and 5GB per variant |
| 7 | Set download limits and enable downloads on the Thank you page | Defaults are unlimited access |
| 8 | Recreate discount codes and any affiliate or license-key setup through apps | None of it moves automatically |
| 9 | Swap links in bios, video descriptions and newsletters | Old links keep selling through Gumroad until changed |
| 10 | Leave Gumroad products live for past buyers | Their receipts and Library still deliver from Gumroad |
The reverse move, from Shopify to Gumroad, is mostly about simplifying: export customers, recreate products as Gumroad pages, and wait out Gumroad's one-to-three-week account review before the first payout.
How to Choose Between Shopify and Gumroad
Work through these questions in order and stop at the first clear answer, because the first two are about what you sell and whether it is proven, and those settle Shopify vs Gumroad before monthly volume does.
1. Do you sell anything physical, such as prints, books or merch? If yes, Shopify. Gumroad does not ship goods. If not, go to question 2.
2. Are you still proving the product, or selling fewer than about ten copies a month? If yes, Gumroad, which costs nothing until you sell. If not, go to question 3.
3. Do you want worldwide sales tax and VAT handled by the platform? If yes, Gumroad as merchant of record. If you can register and file yourself, or sell mostly at home under thresholds, go to question 4.
4. Does Gumroad's Discover marketplace send you a meaningful share of buyers? If yes, keep at least an entry product there. If not, go to question 5.
5. Is Shopify Payments available where you live? If yes, Shopify Basic is the cheaper home above about ten sales a month on a $25 product. If not, add Shopify's 2% third-party fee and recheck.
6. Are your products files, and do your buyers arrive at a portfolio site where you also deliver client work? If yes, compare Framekit, which costs about what Shopify Basic does and puts the store inside that site.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Shopify cheaper than Gumroad for digital products?
Yes, Shopify Basic is cheaper than Gumroad once you sell more than about ten $25 digital products a month.
With card processing counted, Gumroad costs $966 a year at $500 a month in sales, $3,864 at $2,000 and $9,660 at $5,000, while Shopify Basic billed yearly costs $594, $1,332 and $2,808 using Shopify Payments.
How much does Shopify cost a month in 2026?
Shopify Basic costs $39 a month billed monthly or $29 a month billed yearly in the US, Grow costs $105 or $79, and Advanced $399 or $299.
In euros, Shopify's pricing page lists Basic at €29 or €22, Grow at €82 or €62 and Advanced at €384 or €289. Shopify Payments then charges card processing, from 2.9% plus 30 cents for standard US cards on Basic.
Does Shopify charge a transaction fee on digital products?
Shopify charges no transaction fee on any product when you use Shopify Payments; you pay only the card rate.
If your main payment provider is someone else, Shopify adds a third-party fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, on top of that provider's own rate.
Can Shopify sell digital downloads?
Yes, through Shopify's free Digital Products app. Each variant can carry up to 50 files with a combined size of 5GB, buyers receive access by email and on the Thank you and Order status pages, links do not expire, and you can email past buyers updated files with Send update.
How much does Gumroad take from a $25 sale?
Gumroad takes about $4.03 from a $25 direct sale to a US card buyer: its 10% plus $0.50 platform fee ($3.00) and card processing of 2.9% plus $0.30 ($1.03), which its fee article says is not included.
A sale credited to Gumroad's Discover marketplace pays a flat 30%, $7.50, with processing included.
Does Shopify handle VAT and sales tax like Gumroad?
No. Gumroad is a merchant of record and collects and remits sales tax and VAT worldwide.
Shopify calculates sales tax at checkout on every plan, but you are the seller, and Shopify's help centre says it is your responsibility to file and remit. For a seller with many EU or UK buyers, that difference can outweigh the fee gap.
How fast does Shopify pay out compared with Gumroad?
Shopify Payments pays US merchants within 3 to 5 business days after a payment is captured, with no minimum payout, though new accounts can take longer.
Gumroad holds each sale for at least seven days, pays weekly covering sales through the previous Friday, needs a $100 balance, and pays US bank accounts on Thursdays.
Does Shopify or Gumroad refund fees on a refunded order?
Gumroad returns its own fee on a refunded sale and keeps only the card processing, about $1.03 on $25.
Shopify's help centre says the original credit card transaction fee is not refunded when you issue a refund, so a refunded $25 order costs a Shopify seller the same $1.03; the monthly plan is unaffected.
Who handles chargebacks on Shopify and on Gumroad?
On Shopify you do: the disputed amount comes out of your next payout, US stores pay a $15 chargeback fee that Shopify may return if you win, and you submit the evidence.
On Gumroad, a chargeback is treated as a full refund, Gumroad returns its fee, and it contests the dispute with any evidence you add within 72 hours.
Which is better for a first digital product?
Gumroad is better for a first digital product, because it costs nothing until you sell, takes minutes to set up and needs no website, and its Discover marketplace can bring early buyers.
Move to Shopify, or another flat-fee store, once you consistently sell more than about ten copies a month.
Which should I use if I sell prints and presets?
Use Shopify if you sell prints and presets together, because it handles shipping, inventory and variants for prints and delivers presets through its free Digital Products app in the same checkout.
Gumroad cannot ship physical products, and neither can Framekit, which sells digital downloads only.
Can I use Shopify and Gumroad at the same time?
Yes. A common setup keeps an entry product on Gumroad for Discover reach and sells the full catalogue, including anything physical, from Shopify. Only Gumroad remits tax on its sales, so your own tax registrations still apply to everything sold through Shopify.
Shopify vs Gumroad vs Framekit: which suits a filmmaker selling LUTs?
A filmmaker selling only LUTs to their own audience pays far less on Shopify Basic or Framekit Business than on Gumroad above about ten sales a month, and the two cost within $24 a year of each other.
Pick Shopify to sell physical merch too, Framekit to put the LUT store inside a portfolio site with client galleries and review, and Gumroad to have tax handled.
Our guide to selling LUTs online covers the setup.
Final Verdict
Start on Gumroad if you are still finding out whether a product sells, have no website, or want a merchant of record to carry worldwide tax and disputes.
Do not stay on it out of habit: on a $25 product, Shopify Basic is cheaper from about ten sales a month, and by $2,000 a month in sales the gap is about $2,500 a year.
Choose Shopify when the product is proven, when you sell anything physical, or when you want a store, a customer database and an app ecosystem you control.
Keep Shopify Payments as your gateway, stay on Basic until someone else needs a login, and budget a day to build the store well.
Where Framekit loses is clear: it sells no physical goods, calculates no tax and has no app store, so it is not for a seller with prints or merch.
The trade-off it offers is a digital store at about Shopify Basic's price, inside a portfolio site that also delivers client galleries, video review and decks.
