Lemon Squeezy vs Payhip in 2026: 5% Is Not 5%

Payhip's free plan charges 5 percent. Lemon Squeezy, at lemonsqueezy.com, charges 5 percent plus 50 cents. Read those two lines and Payhip looks cheaper on every sale.

On a $29 template pack sold to a US card buyer it is the other way round: Payhip Free costs $2.59 and Lemon Squeezy costs $1.95, because Payhip's 5% sits on top of your own Stripe or PayPal fee and Lemon Squeezy's 5% plus 50 cents already pays for card processing, currency conversion and tax.

The headline numbers hide a second, bigger difference. Lemon Squeezy is a merchant of record: it sells your product in its own name, files sales tax and VAT everywhere, and fights chargebacks.

Payhip is not: the money goes straight into your own payment account the moment a sale completes, Payhip collects and remits EU and UK VAT for you, and everything else, from US sales tax to disputes, is yours.

And Lemon Squeezy's own January 2026 update says its team is now building Stripe Managed Payments, with an easy migration path as the goal.

We re-verified every Lemon Squeezy and Payhip fee, payout rule and tax term on this page at the source on 12 October 2026, and moved the carried example from $39 to $29 so its numbers line up with our other comparisons of these two platforms.

A digital product platform is a service that hosts your files, takes the payment and delivers the download, and Lemon Squeezy and Payhip disagree about the one thing that shapes every bill: whose merchant account the sale belongs to.

Quick Answer

Lemon Squeezy is cheaper than every Payhip plan below about $3,550 a month in sales of a $29 product, at $403 a year against Payhip's $536 at $500 a month and $1,614 against $1,772 at $2,000, because its 5% plus 50 cents includes card processing and Payhip's percentage does not.

Above that, Payhip Pro at $99 a month with no transaction fee wins, at $3,549 against $4,034 at $5,000 a month.

Lemon Squeezy also handles tax worldwide as merchant of record, while Payhip pays instantly into your own account, covers EU and UK VAT, and sells courses, coaching and memberships.

Framekit is a separate third option for creators who want the store on their own portfolio site.

Full disclosure: Framekit is our product; it appears below as a labelled third option for portfolio sellers and does not claim the Lemon Squeezy vs Payhip win. No purchases were made on either platform for this page, and every Lemon Squeezy and Payhip figure comes from their own pricing pages and help documentation, read on 12 October 2026.

How We Compared Lemon Squeezy and Payhip

This comparison takes the fees, payout rules and tax terms each platform publishes, applies them to one carried product at three sales volumes, and keeps what was read apart from what was calculated, because no live purchase was made on either platform.

Read at the source on 12 October 2026. Lemon Squeezy's fees documentation, its getting-paid, refunds, chargebacks and payment-methods docs, its pricing page and its January 2026 update.

Payhip's pricing page, its feature pages, and its help centre on refunds, custom domains and supported payment processors.

Calculated. A $29 template pack sold at $500, $2,000 and $5,000 a month, about 17, 69 and 172 sales.

Payhip rows add Stripe's standard US rate of 2.9% plus 30 cents, which Payhip's pricing FAQ says your processor charges on top at its normal rates.

A second table assumes half the buyers pay with cards issued outside the US, where Lemon Squeezy adds 1.5% and Stripe adds 1.5% for international cards.

Not tested, and corrected. The August version of this page used "measured" and "verified" labels for flows we did not run; those labels are gone. It also missed that Lemon Squeezy absorbs its own fee on a refund, which is now in the mechanics table.

Lemon Squeezy vs Payhip at a Glance

This table sets Lemon Squeezy and Payhip side by side on the sixteen points that decide where a creator sells templates, presets, ebooks or software, using each platform's October 2026 terms.

In one lineLemon Squeezy is the cheaper all-in checkout with a tax department attached, Payhip is the broader store that pays you on the spot and covers Europe, and volume decides which one costs less.

Why Two 5 Percent Fees Produce Different Bills

Lemon Squeezy's 5% plus 50 cents covers card processing and Payhip's 5% does not, so on a $29 US card sale Lemon Squeezy takes $1.95 in total while Payhip's free plan takes $1.45 plus about $1.14 of Stripe processing, $2.59.

Lemon Squeezy's fees documentation describes its 5% plus 50 cents as a fee that exists to cover credit card transaction fees, currency conversion and taxes.

Payhip's pricing page lists Free Forever at 5%, Plus at $29 a month and 2%, and Pro at $99 a month with no transaction fee, and its FAQ adds that PayPal and Stripe still charge their standard rates on every plan.

Here is what the seller keeps from one sale to a US card buyer at seven prices.

PriceLemon Squeezy keepsPayhip Free keepsPayhip Plus keepsPayhip Pro keeps
$5$4.25$4.30$4.45$4.55
$9$8.05$7.99$8.26$8.44

$49$46.05$44.83$46.30$47.28
$99$93.55$90.88$93.85$95.83

The fixed 50 cents flips the answer on cheap products. Lemon Squeezy beats Payhip Free on every product priced above about $6.90; below that, Payhip Free keeps more, because 50 cents is a large share of a small price.

Lemon Squeezy's documentation invites sellers of products under $10 to ask for custom pricing.

Payhip's paid plans keep more per sale but cost a monthly fee. Plus and Pro keep more than Lemon Squeezy on every individual sale, at every price.

Whether they beat it over a month depends on how many sales carry the $29 or $99 plan, which is what the next section works out.

What Lemon Squeezy and Payhip Cost Over a Year

At $2,000 a month in sales of a $29 product, Lemon Squeezy costs $1,614 a year and Payhip's cheapest plan for that volume, Plus, costs $1,772 including Stripe processing, while at $5,000 a month Payhip Pro is the cheaper of the two at $3,549 against $4,034.

Every figure is the seller's full annual cost: platform fee, card processing and plan. Payhip's prices are monthly, since its pricing page showed no annual rate in our read. Framekit is included for orientation, with its paid plans billed yearly.

Payhip Free vs Lemon SqueezyNever on products above about $6.90Payhip Free costs more per sale

So the ladder is short: Lemon Squeezy below roughly $3,550 a month, Payhip Pro above it. Payhip Plus is never the cheapest option against Lemon Squeezy on a $29 product, because Pro overtakes Lemon Squeezy at a slightly lower volume.

The non-US seller's footnote. Lemon Squeezy charges 1% on payouts to bank accounts outside the US. At $2,000 a month in sales that is about $220 a year, which nearly erases its $158 lead over Payhip Plus.

Payhip charges nothing to pay you, but your own Stripe or PayPal rate depends on your country, so a seller outside the US should rebuild this table with local processor rates.

Run it yourselfmultiply your price by 5% and add 50 cents for Lemon Squeezy's cost per sale. Multiply it by 7.9% and add 30 cents for Payhip Free.

Take the difference between Lemon Squeezy and Payhip Pro (your price times 2.9%, plus 30 cents), divide $99 by it, and you have the number of monthly sales at which Payhip Pro takes over.

Merchant of Record vs VAT Collector: The Tax Difference

Lemon Squeezy is the legal seller and takes every sales tax and VAT obligation on the sales it processes, while Payhip collects and remits EU and UK VAT without becoming the seller, so Payhip covers the hardest European case and leaves US sales tax and everything else with you.

Lemon Squeezy. Its pricing page describes taking on the liability of tax calculation and collection and paying taxes on your behalf.

The cost of that service shows up in the fee base: Lemon Squeezy charges its percentage on the total including tax.

On a $29 sale to a French buyer paying 20% VAT, the total is $34.80 and the fee is 50 cents plus 5% of $34.80 plus 1.5% for an international payment, $2.76, so you keep $26.24, about 9.5% below your list price.

Payhip. Its pricing page says it is fully compliant to collect and remit EU VAT and UK VAT on your behalf automatically, on every plan. Other taxes you can set up yourself, and Payhip reports them to you.

Payhip is not the merchant, so registering and filing anything outside its VAT handling is your job.

Who should care. A seller outside the EU owes VAT on digital sales to EU consumers from the first sale, usually through the EU's One Stop Shop, and a non-UK seller owes UK VAT to UK consumers from the first sale; Payhip covers both for free.

US sales tax only bites once your sales into a state pass its economic nexus threshold, commonly $100,000 a year, and many states do not tax downloads, so a small US seller selling mostly at home may owe nothing.

A seller with buyers spread across many tax regimes outside Europe gets real cover from Lemon Squeezy that Payhip does not offer.

Payouts, Refunds and Chargebacks: The Mechanics

Payhip pays you the moment a sale completes because the money lands in your own account, while Lemon Squeezy holds net sales for 13 days and pays twice a month, but Lemon Squeezy is the kinder of the two when a sale is refunded or disputed.

The cash-flow difference is the clearest Payhip advantage. A $29 sale on the 4th is in a Payhip seller's Stripe balance that afternoon and follows Stripe's normal payout schedule.

The same sale reaches a Lemon Squeezy seller on the 28th, by Lemon Squeezy's own example, plus the time a bank transfer takes.

The bad-day difference is the clearest Lemon Squeezy advantage. A refunded $29 sale costs a Lemon Squeezy seller nothing and costs a Payhip seller at least the $1.14 Stripe keeps.

A chargeback on Lemon Squeezy is argued for you; on Payhip you write the evidence yourself.

Checkout, Files and Delivery Specs

Lemon Squeezy offers more payment methods and a buyer account that always holds the latest files, while Payhip gives sellers firmer control over each file, with download limits, expiring links and PDF stamping, and lets PayPal buyers pay straight into the seller's PayPal account.

For creative files, two rows matter. Lemon Squeezy's automatic delivery of updated files is worth real time if you revise a template or preset pack every quarter.

Payhip's three-download default needs raising for presets and LUTs, because a buyer setting up a third computer hits it; its PDF stamping is a genuine anti-sharing feature for ebooks.

Where Lemon Squeezy Wins

Lemon Squeezy is the better choice for sellers under about $3,550 a month, for anyone selling software or subscriptions, and for anyone who wants every tax obligation and every dispute taken off their desk, provided they are comfortable building on a product that is preparing users for a move to Stripe.

Cheaper below the crossover. $403 against $536 a year at $500 a month, and $1,614 against $1,772 at $2,000, with no plan to pay for.

Tax and disputes handled. Merchant-of-record cover everywhere, a refund policy that leaves you even, and a team that builds the chargeback case.

A billing toolkit Payhip does not match. Subscriptions with free trials, usage-based billing, license key generation and a customer portal. For software, plugins and SaaS, this is decisive.

Wider checkout. Up to 21 payment methods, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay and WeChat Pay, and an overlay checkout that keeps buyers on your existing site.

The caveat. The January 2026 update owns that support had slowed and updates had thinned, calls Stripe Managed Payments the future of the merchant-of-record idea, and says the aim is an easy migration path.

No shutdown has been announced and no date given. Stripe lists Managed Payments at 3.5% on top of its standard processing, about $2.16 on a $29 US card sale, leaving $26.84.

Verdict: if you sell software or subscriptions, sell globally and want tax gone, or sell under about $3,550 a month, Lemon Squeezy is the better tool today; keep your customer export current. Readers already on it will find the best Lemon Squeezy alternatives and Lemon Squeezy vs Stripe useful for planning the next step.

Where Payhip Wins

Payhip is the better choice for sellers above about $3,550 a month, for course creators and coaches, for anyone whose cash flow cannot wait for a twice-monthly payout, and for sellers whose main tax exposure is European buyers.

Cheaper at volume. At $5,000 a month Payhip Pro costs $3,549 a year against Lemon Squeezy's $4,034, and the gap widens as sales grow, because Pro's cost is flat apart from processing.

Paid on the day. No balance, no hold, no minimum and no payout fee from Payhip. The sale is in your own account when it completes.

Courses, coaching and memberships. Courses with quizzes, certificates and drip content, coaching with Zoom and Calendly scheduling, and memberships with tiers and free trials, on every plan. Lemon Squeezy sells none of the first two.

No surcharges and no feature gating. Payhip adds nothing for international buyers, PayPal or subscriptions, and its pricing page says every plan has every feature. You only pay to lower the percentage.

A free custom domain and more processor choice. Every account can connect a domain, and Payhip supports 13 payment processors, which matters in countries where Stripe is not available.

The honest limits. Payhip is not your merchant of record, so disputes and non-European tax are yours, and on a $29 product its free plan costs more per sale than Lemon Squeezy.

Verdict: Payhip is the better long-term home for a growing seller with a European audience or a course, and the right plan is Free under $967 a month, Plus to $3,500 and Pro above. For course-first comparisons see Payhip vs Podia, and for the wider field the best Payhip alternatives.

Framekit: A Third Option for Portfolio Sellers

Framekit is not a merchant of record and does not try to win Lemon Squeezy vs Payhip, but it is the better fit for one seller neither serves fully: a photographer, filmmaker or designer whose buyers arrive through a portfolio site and who also delivers client work.

Framekit is an AI website builder that gives that seller a portfolio site, a digital-download store, client galleries, Frame.io-style video review and Slides decks under one login, with storage pooled across them (10GB on Free, 300GB on Pro, 2TB on Business).

A commercial film production homepage built with Framekit, with a full-width reel still and the studio's navigation
A commercial film production homepage built with Framekit, with a full-width reel still and the studio's navigation

What it does that neither does. Each product appears as a section you can place on any page of your site, under a case study or beside a reel, and gets a direct framekit.ai/buy link that sells with no website at all, in a newsletter or a video description.

Lemon Squeezy and Payhip build storefronts; Framekit builds the portfolio and puts the store inside it.

Where its price lands between these two. Framekit charges 5% on Free and Starter, 3% on Pro and 0% on Business at $39 a month ($31 billed yearly), with Stripe's processing on top and the fee taken after any discount code.

On a $29 product, Framekit Free costs the same as Payhip Free and more than Lemon Squeezy.

Framekit Business is cheaper than both above about $1,111 a month on yearly billing: $1,316 a year at $2,000 a month against $1,614 on Lemon Squeezy and $1,772 on Payhip Plus.

Within Framekit, Business beats Free at $780 a month and beats Pro at about $667 a month ($533 on yearly billing).

What you give up. Framekit is behind both of them on tax: it does not collect or remit VAT or sales tax at all, where Payhip at least covers Europe.

You are the merchant, so disputes arrive in your Stripe account, and Framekit keeps its fee when you refund.

The checkout opens at framekit.ai/buy with your name, logo and a "Powered by Framekit" line on every plan, rather than on your domain. Discount codes need Pro.

Order-email download links last 7 days and can be resent; updates are not pushed to past buyers.

There are no subscriptions, courses, coaching, license keys, affiliates, pay what you want, order bumps, abandoned-cart emails or physical products, and checkout runs on Stripe only, with no PayPal.

Skip it ifyou sell software or courses, want EU VAT handled, need PayPal, or have no portfolio site to put the store on.

Verdict: Framekit is the cheaper store above about $1,100 a month for a working creative selling presets, LUTs or templates beside client work, and the only option here that also runs the site and the deliveries. The pairings are priced in Lemon Squeezy vs Framekit and Framekit vs Payhip.

Going the other way, from Payhip to Lemon Squeezy, removes the tax work but adds the 13-day hold and twice-monthly payout calendar, so plan for a gap of three to four weeks before the first Lemon Squeezy money arrives.

How to Choose Between Lemon Squeezy and Payhip

Work through these questions in order and stop at the first clear yes, because the first three are about what you sell and who handles tax, and those settle Lemon Squeezy vs Payhip before monthly volume comes into it.

1. Do you sell software, subscriptions with usage billing, or anything needing license-key activation? If yes, Lemon Squeezy. If not, go to question 2.

2. Do you sell courses, coaching or physical products? If yes, Payhip, which sells all three on every plan. If not, go to question 3.

3. Do you want every sales tax and VAT obligation, worldwide, off your desk? If yes, Lemon Squeezy as merchant of record. If your exposure is mostly EU and UK buyers, Payhip covers it, so go to question 4.

4. Can your cash flow wait for payouts on the 14th and 28th? If not, Payhip, which pays the moment a sale completes. If it can, go to question 5.

5. How much do you sell a month? On a product around $29, under about $3,550, Lemon Squeezy is cheaper; above it, Payhip Pro. On products under about $7, Payhip Free keeps more per sale.

6. Is the store one part of a creative business with a portfolio and client deliveries? If yes, and you are ready to handle tax yourself, compare Framekit, which costs less than either above about $1,100 a month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lemon Squeezy cheaper than Payhip?

Lemon Squeezy is cheaper than Payhip below about $3,550 a month in sales of a $29 product, and Payhip Pro is cheaper above it.

Lemon Squeezy costs $403 a year at $500 a month, $1,614 at $2,000 and $4,034 at $5,000; Payhip's cheapest plan at each volume costs $536, $1,772 and $3,549, with Stripe processing included.

Does Payhip's 5 percent include payment processing?

No. Payhip's fee sits on top of your processor's charge, and its pricing FAQ says PayPal and Stripe still charge their standard rates on every plan.

At Stripe's standard US rate of 2.9% plus 30 cents, a $29 sale on Payhip Free costs $2.59 in total. Lemon Squeezy's 5% plus 50 cents includes processing, so the same sale costs $1.95.

Is Payhip a merchant of record like Lemon Squeezy?

No. Lemon Squeezy is the merchant of record and sells in its own name, handling sales tax, VAT and disputes.

Payhip is not the seller: payments go into your own Stripe, PayPal or other processor account, and you handle disputes and most taxes. Payhip does collect and remit EU and UK VAT on your behalf on every plan.

When should I move from Lemon Squeezy to Payhip?

Move from Lemon Squeezy to Payhip Pro once you sell more than about $3,550 a month of a $29 product, roughly 122 sales, because Payhip Pro's flat $99 then costs less than Lemon Squeezy's per-sale fee.

Before moving, decide how you will handle US sales tax and disputes, which Lemon Squeezy did for you.

How quickly does each one pay out?

Payhip deposits each sale into your connected Stripe or PayPal account as the transaction completes, with no minimum and no payout fee from Payhip.

Lemon Squeezy creates payouts on the 1st and 15th and pays on the 14th and 28th after a 13-day hold, with a $50 minimum, so a sale on the 4th is paid on the 28th.

Does Lemon Squeezy or Payhip keep its fee when I refund?

Lemon Squeezy does not: it deducts only the refunded amount minus its platform fee from your next payout, so a refund leaves you even.

On Payhip you refund from Stripe or PayPal, Stripe keeps its original processing fee of about $1.14 on a $29 sale, and Payhip's help centre does not say whether its own percentage is returned.

Who handles chargebacks on Lemon Squeezy and Payhip?

Lemon Squeezy handles chargebacks as the merchant and builds the case; you pay the refunded amount minus the platform fee plus a $15 dispute fee.

On Payhip the dispute arrives in your own Stripe or PayPal account and you respond; on Stripe US that costs $15, plus $15 more to counter, returned if you win.

Are there hidden fees on Lemon Squeezy or Payhip?

Lemon Squeezy adds 1.5% for international transactions, 1.5% for PayPal, 0.5% for subscriptions, 5% on abandoned-cart recoveries and 3% on affiliate referrals, plus 1% on payouts to non-US banks.

Payhip adds no conditional fees of its own, but your processor's international and currency-conversion rates apply.

Which is better for products under $10?

Payhip Free is better for products under about $7, because Lemon Squeezy's fixed 50 cents dominates a small price: on a $5 product Lemon Squeezy keeps $4.25 for the seller and Payhip Free $4.30.

From about $7 upward Lemon Squeezy keeps more per sale than Payhip Free, and its documentation invites sellers of sub-$10 products to ask for custom pricing.

Which is better for a seller outside the US?

A seller outside the US should rebuild the numbers with local rates.

Lemon Squeezy adds 1.5% on non-US transactions and 1% on payouts to non-US banks, about $220 a year at $2,000 a month in sales, while Payhip adds nothing of its own and charges your local Stripe or PayPal rate.

European sellers also get EU and UK VAT handled on both.

Is Lemon Squeezy still safe to use in 2026?

Lemon Squeezy still takes payments, files tax and pays out in October 2026, and no shutdown has been announced.

Its January 2026 update says the team is building Stripe Managed Payments and aims to give users an easy migration path, so keep your customer list and product files exported and treat a future move as likely.

Can I use Lemon Squeezy and Payhip together?

Yes. Some sellers route software or subscriptions through Lemon Squeezy for the billing tools and tax cover, and sell downloads, courses or coaching through Payhip for the instant payouts.

The cost is two dashboards, two customer lists and two payout calendars, so it is worth it only when each platform does something the other cannot.

Lemon Squeezy vs Payhip vs Framekit: which suits a preset seller?

A preset seller who wants tax handled worldwide should pick Lemon Squeezy, and one who sells courses alongside presets or needs instant payouts should pick Payhip.

A preset seller with a portfolio site and more than about $1,100 a month in sales pays least on Framekit Business, at the cost of handling VAT and disputes.

Our guide to selling Lightroom presets from your own website covers that setup.

Final Verdict

Choose Lemon Squeezy if you sell under about $3,550 a month, sell software or subscriptions, or want every tax obligation and dispute handled for you, because in each case it is either the cheaper option or the only one that does the job.

Keep an exit plan ready, because its own team has said where it is heading.

Choose Payhip if you sell above that volume, sell courses, coaching or physical goods, sell mostly to Europe, or need each sale in your account the day it happens. Payhip Pro at $99 a month is the plan to compare against Lemon Squeezy at volume, not Plus.

Where Framekit loses is everything both of these handle better: it does not collect any tax, does not argue disputes, has no PayPal and sells nothing recurring, so it is not for software sellers or course creators.

The trade-off it offers is the cheapest store above about $1,100 a month for a creative professional, inside a portfolio site that also delivers client work.
